Description

Precision hydraulic tube is drawn cold from hot finished seamless hollows, which is what gives it the tight diameter and wall tolerances and the smooth bore that a 24° cone or bite-type fitting needs in order to seal and grip. EN 10305-4 is the standard written for exactly this duty - technical delivery conditions for seamless cold drawn steel tubes of circular cross section used in hydraulic and pneumatic power systems.

Grades are E215 (1.0212), E235 (1.0308) and E355 (1.0580); E235 is the common general-purpose grade and E355 is used where a higher strength is needed at a given wall. Tube to this standard is delivered in the +N condition, meaning it is normalized in a controlled atmosphere after the final cold drawing operation, which restores ductility for bending and flaring.

The standard deliberately fixes no pressure rating. It states that the allowed pressure rates and upper temperatures are the responsibility of the customer, in accordance with the state of the art and the safety coefficients of the applicable regulations or codes; impact energy requirements are given at 0 °C. Any working pressure figure therefore comes from the system designer's calculation on the ordered diameter and wall, not from the tube specification.

Order by outside diameter and wall thickness with the grade and length, in the form the standard itself uses: 1 000 m tubes - D 20 x T 2,5 - EN 10305-4 - E235 - standard length. Add the surface protection if required: phosphating, zinc plating with blue-white, yellow or olive-green chromating, or zinc plating with chromium(VI)-free passivation. Match the tube outside diameter to the fitting series - ISO 8434-1 (DIN 2353) fittings come in L and S series and the same metric thread serves different tube diameters across them, so M16x1.5 is 10L and also 8S.

Specifications

Standard EN 10305-4 - technical delivery conditions for seamless cold drawn steel tubes of circular cross section used in hydraulic and pneumatic power systems
Steel Grades E215 (1.0212), E235 (1.0308) and E355 (1.0580)
Delivery Condition +N - normalized in a controlled atmosphere after the final cold drawing operation
Manufacture Cold drawn from hot finished seamless hollows; tubes are characterised by closely defined dimensional tolerances and a specified maximum surface roughness
Ordering Designation Outside diameter x wall thickness, grade and length - the standard's own example is "1 000 m tubes - D 20 x T 2,5 - EN 10305-4 - E235 - standard length"
Surface Protection Options Phosphating (option 31); zinc plating with blue-white, yellow or olive-green chromating (options 33 to 35); zinc plating with chromium(VI)-free passivation (option 36)
Working Pressure Not set by the standard - EN 10305-4 states that the allowed pressure rates and upper temperatures are the responsibility of the customer, applying the safety coefficients of the applicable regulations or codes
Low Temperature Testing Impact energy requirements are given at 0 °C
Fitting Compatibility The tube outside diameter must match the fitting series: ISO 8434-1 (DIN 2353) 24° cone fittings are made in L (light) and S (heavy) series and one metric thread can serve two tube diameters - M16x1.5 is 10L and also 8S
