The Mitutoyo Series 3 is a long-travel dial indicator with a large 78 mm dial face, made for measurement where the instrument has to be read from a distance or where the travel required is beyond what a standard indicator offers. Two models are catalogued, with 50 mm and 80 mm of travel, both graduated in 0.01 mm.
A coaxial revolution counter runs on the same axis as the main hand and counts full turns, which is what makes a long travel readable - without it, 80 mm of plunger movement on a 0.01 mm dial is easy to misread by a whole revolution. The movement is jewelled for smooth plunger response, and the construction is shockproof, which suits vertical measurement work where the plunger can be released against a stop.
Typical work is runout, alignment and comparative measurement, surface plate and fixture inspection, and machine setup, usually with the indicator held in a magnetic stand or holder. Accuracy is 30 µm on the 50 mm model and 45 µm on the 80 mm model.
When ordering, state the travel required and confirm the 8 mm stem suits the holder: 3058A-19 gives 50 mm and 3060A-19 gives 80 mm.
