Description

Adapters join two different connection ends: a port thread to a hose swivel, a JIC nut to a metric cone, a BSPP male to an ORFS female. They are the parts that make a circuit fit together, and they are also where most leaks are created, because a size and a letter - half inch BSP - does not identify a joint. Two things do: the thread form, which decides whether it screws together at all, and the sealing geometry, which decides whether it holds pressure once it does.

The standards behind the range are ISO 8434-1 for the 24 degree metric cone, ISO 8434-2 for the 37 degree flare (JIC), ISO 8434-3 for the O-ring face seal (ORFS) and ISO 8434-6 for the 60 degree BSP cone; the port ends follow ISO 1179-1 for BSPP, ISO 9974-1 and ISO 6149-1 for metric ports and ISO 11926-1 for SAE straight thread ports. ISO 8434-1 covers ferrous and non-ferrous tube from 4 mm to 42 mm outside diameter in three series - LL extra light, L light and S heavy - and each series carries its own pressure table.

The trap in metric fittings is that the thread alone does not identify the part. M16 x 1,5 is the 24 degree cone thread for 10 mm tube in the L series and for 8 mm tube in the S series. The threads are identical; the bores and the pressure ratings are not. Order by tube outside diameter, series letter, thread form and seal type together.

Specifications

Type Threaded adapters and thread converters - straight, 90 degree elbow, tee, bulkhead and stud ends
Standards ISO 8434-1 (24 degree metric cone), ISO 8434-2 (37 degree flare, JIC), ISO 8434-3 (ORFS), ISO 8434-6 (60 degree BSP cone); ports to ISO 1179-1 (BSPP), ISO 9974-1 and ISO 6149-1 (metric), ISO 11926-1 (SAE straight thread)
Tube Size Range ISO 8434-1 covers ferrous and non-ferrous tube with outside diameters from 4 mm to 42 mm inclusive
Series LL extra light-duty, L light-duty, S heavy-duty. The series is part of the designation and is not implied by the thread
Working Pressure Size and series dependent, design factor 4:1 - LL 100 bar; L 250 bar at 6 to 15 mm tube OD falling to 100 bar at 28 to 42 mm; S 630 bar at 6 to 12 mm falling to 250 bar at 30 to 38 mm
Temperature Range -40 to +120 degrees C with petroleum-base hydraulic fluids, from a vacuum of 6,5 kPa absolute up to the rated working pressure (carbon steel connectors)
Material Carbon steel bodies per ISO 8434-1. For stainless steel and copper alloy bodies the pressure and temperature ratings have to be defined by the manufacturer
Ordering Thread size alone does not identify the fitting: M16 x 1,5 is the 24 degree cone thread for 10 mm tube in series L and for 8 mm tube in series S. State tube OD, series, thread form and seal type
Thread Forms Supplied BSPP parallel (ISO 228-1) sealing on a bonded washer or 60 degree cone; BSPT taper (ISO 7-1) and NPT (ASME B1.20.1) sealing on the thread; JIC 37 degree and ORFS sealing metal to metal and on an O-ring respectively
