Description
A flat-face coupling seals on two flush discs instead of a probe and a recessed poppet. That is the whole point of the pattern: there is almost nothing for oil to sit in when the halves are parted, and nothing for sand to lodge in before they are put back together. ISO 16028 Table 2 puts the maximum fluid loss per disconnection at 0,02 ml in size 6,3 and 0,25 ml in size 25. For comparison, FASTER lists 1,8 ml at 1/2 inch for its ISO 7241-A interchange range and 0,01 ml at the same size for its flat-face range - roughly two orders of magnitude.
Rated operating pressure is 315 bar in size 6,3, 250 bar from size 10 to 19 and 200 bar in size 25, with minimum burst at four times those figures. Rated flow runs from 12 l/min in size 6,3 to 189 l/min in size 25 at a maximum pressure drop of 1 bar. The 2023 edition widened the scope to 10 MPa to 31,5 MPa depending on size and added sizes 31,5, 38 and 51.
ISO 16028 states plainly that couplings to the document are not designed to connect or disconnect under pressure. Flat-face halves do not mate with ISO 7241 Series A or Series B: the flat-face male has no probe to enter a Series A female and its own female has no poppet for a probe to lift. Choose the interface for the fleet, not for the individual machine, and state size, interface, port thread and seal material at order.
