Description

An ISO 7241 Series A coupling is the ball-lock, poppet-valve pattern: the female half carries the locking balls and a sliding sleeve, the male half is a stepped probe that lifts the poppet as it enters. ISO 7241 states that Series A is used predominantly in Europe and is preferred worldwide for agricultural and forestry machinery.

Rated pressure is not one number. ISO 7241-1 Table 4 gives the maximum operating pressure by size: 315 bar at 6,3 and 10 mm, 250 bar at 12,5 and 20 mm, 200 bar at 25 and 31,5 mm, 160 bar at 40 mm and 100 bar at 50 mm, with a minimum burst of four times operating throughout. A 315 bar ISO-A coupling is only a 315 bar coupling in the two smallest sizes. In 2023 ISO renamed sizes 20, 40 and 50 to 19, 38 and 51 to align with ISO 4397; the couplings are unchanged.

These couplings are not designed to be connected or disconnected under pressure. ISO 7241-1 Table 5 gives the maximum residual pressure at which a coupling can still be connected by hand, and it falls steeply with size: 10 bar at 6,3 mm, 3,15 bar at 20 mm, 0,5 bar at 50 mm. On large sizes that is why decompression provision is fitted.

Series A, Series B and the ISO 16028 flat-face interface are three separate interfaces that do not mate with one another - there is no adapter, only a purpose-made transition coupling with two halves back to back. State size, interface, port thread and seal material at order.
