The Mitutoyo RG-D4 is a radius gauge set of 18 leaves covering radii from 0.4 to 6.0 mm. Each leaf carries both an internal (concave) and an external (convex) profile of the same radius over a 90 degree arc, so a fillet and the corner it mates with can be checked with one leaf.
The radius is checked by sighting against the light: the correct leaf sits on the profile with no gap at either end of the arc. The size is stamped on each leaf, which is what makes a set usable at the bench, since a radius cannot be identified by eye to the resolution the set offers.
Typical work is checking edge radii, fillets and machined profiles, tool room and die work inspection, and matching internal and external radii when a replacement part is made to sample.
