Carbon Steel Flanged Type Gate Valve

Carbon Steel Gate Valve, Flanged

Bolted-bonnet wedge gate valve with flanged ends for isolation duty on water, steam and process lines. Flange drilling must be ordered as either EN 1092-1 PN or ASME B16.5 Class; the two systems do not mate.

Description

A flanged gate valve is the standard isolation valve on bolted pipework from about DN 50 upward. The bonnet is bolted to the body rather than screwed, so the joint can be gasketed, retorqued and, on larger sizes, opened for reseating without cutting the valve out of the line.

The one detail that decides whether the valve fits the line is the flange. EN 1092-1 PN flanges and ASME B16.5 Class flanges are two complete, independent systems: at DN 50 / NPS 2 the PN 16 bolt circle is 125 mm with M16 bolts and the Class 150 bolt circle is 120.7 mm with 5/8 in UNC bolts. Bolting one to the other puts every stud in bending. There is no ASME class equal to PN 16 and no PN equal to Class 150.

Pressure and temperature capability follows the class or PN together with the body material group - the ASME B16.34 tables for Class designated valves, the EN 1092-1 Annex G tables for PN designated ones - not the valve type. Face-to-face dimensions come from ASME B16.10 or EN 558. For refinery and related duty the applicable product standard is API 600, which requires a bolted bonnet, outside screw and yoke, a rising stem with non-rising handwheel, flanged or butt welding ends, and pressure testing to API 598; whether the valve supplied is certified to it must be confirmed with the supplier.

State at order: nominal size, flange standard and rating, body material specification, trim, stem arrangement and whether API 600 or a specific test certificate is required.

Specifications

Valve Type Wedge gate valve, bolted bonnet, flanged ends, handwheel operated
Body Material Carbon steel; the casting or forging specification must be stated at order (ASTM A216 WCB is among the carbon steel body materials listed in API 600)
Flange Drilling To be stated as either EN 1092-1 (PN) or ASME B16.5 (Class). At DN 50 / NPS 2 the bolt circles are 125 mm (PN 16, M16) and 120.7 mm (Class 150, 5/8 in UNC) - the systems do not mate
Pressure - Temperature Rating Set by the class or PN together with the body material group: ASME B16.34 tables for Class designated valves, EN 1092-1 Annex G for PN designated valves
Face-to-Face Dimensions ASME B16.10 for Class designated flanged valves; EN 558 for PN and Class designated metal valves in flanged pipe systems, DN 10 to DN 2000
Heavy Duty Specification For refinery and related service the product standard is API 600: bolted bonnet, outside screw and yoke, rising stem, non-rising handwheel, wedge or parallel seating, flanged or butt welding ends, NPS 1 to 42, Class 150 to 2500, each valve pressure tested per API 598. Confirm whether the valve supplied is certified to it
