Description
A gate valve closes with a wedge that descends across the full bore. When the valve is fully open the bore is practically unobstructed, so the pressure loss through it is low and the valve passes solids and scale better than a seated throttling valve.
This is an isolation valve. It is intended to be run fully open or fully closed, not held part-open to regulate flow. Copper alloy gate valves of this pattern are covered by EN 12288, which fixes materials, pressure and temperature ratings, dimensions, testing and marking for the type; it partially superseded the older British specification BS 5154:1991, which BSI records as still current. EN 12288 covers DN 8 to DN 500 and the designations PN 6 to PN 63 as well as Class 150 and Class 300, so the pressure rating is a property of the individual valve and cannot be inferred from the type.
State at order: nominal size, pressure designation, thread form, copper alloy grade and whether dezincification-resistant brass is required, and whether a rising or non-rising stem is wanted. Thread form matters more than the size letter: a BSPP male will screw into a BSPT female and still leak, and an NPT male will jam in a BSPT port because the flank angles differ.
