Description
The Mitutoyo Series 505 is a mechanical dial caliper: the slider drives a rack and pinion that turns a dial hand, so the fine reading is taken from the dial and the coarse reading from the main scale. Two metric models are catalogued, 0 to 150 mm and 0 to 300 mm.
Because the reading is mechanical there is no battery to fail and nothing to switch on, which is the reason a dial caliper is still specified for stores counters, site work and any place an instrument is used intermittently. The body is hardened stainless steel; on the 150 mm model the sliding surfaces are titanium-coated to resist wear on the bearing faces.
Standard jaws take outside and inside dimensions and a flat depth bar takes depth, so shafts, bores, slots, steps and plates can all be checked with one instrument. Typical work is machine shop and fabrication inspection and maintenance measurement.
When ordering, state the range, and note that the graduation differs with it: 505-732 covers 0 to 150 mm with 0.01 mm graduation and ±0.02 mm accuracy, and 505-745 covers 0 to 300 mm with 0.02 mm graduation and ±0.04 mm accuracy. Each is supplied with a case, an inspection certificate and operating instructions.
