Shuttle Valve

Airmax ASTV Pneumatic Shuttle Valve (OR Function)

Model ASTV-3

Piston-type shuttle valve with two inlets and one outlet. Whichever inlet carries the higher pressure is passed to the cylinder port while the other is sealed off, giving a logical OR between two independent air signals. Offered 1/4" and 1/2".

Description

A shuttle valve has two inlet ports and one outlet. A free piston inside the body is pushed across by whichever inlet is at the higher pressure; that inlet is connected through to the outlet and the piston simultaneously seals the lower-pressure inlet, so air cannot escape back down the idle line. The result is a logical OR: the outlet is live if either inlet is live.

The usual application is two independent controls acting on the same cylinder or the same pilot line - a machine-mounted lever and a remote push button, a manual control and an automatic one, or a normal supply and an emergency supply. Without the shuttle valve, connecting both sources to one port simply lets each vent through the other. The shuttle valve is also the standard way to feed a pressure switch or an indicator from either of two lines.

The body is anodised aluminium with an aluminium connector, an NBR O-ring, and a piston of aluminium with moulded rubber facings which do the sealing. The valve is fully automatic and has no setting.

The 1/4" valve has a 6.5 mm orifice and passes 1100 NLPM at 5 bar; the 1/2" valve has a 12.5 mm orifice and passes 2500 NLPM. Both are rated to 10 kg/cm² and 80 °C. When ordering, state the size and thread form, and confirm the designation with the supplier because Airmax own literature prints both ASTV-3 and ASTV-4 against the 1/2" size.
