A hygienic tee takes a branch off a run with a swept, radiused crotch and no internal step, so that the whole fitting drains and cleans in place. It is formed from tube, and the bore, the wall and the internal finish carry through unchanged.
DIN 11852 makes several patterns and they are not interchangeable: TS is the standard tee, TK the short tee, and RTS and RTK are reduced tees with the branch pointing down. On a reduced tee and on a reducer, the DN size refers to the largest diameter, which is a common source of ordering error.
The dead leg at a branch is the part of a hygienic system that fails a cleaning validation. Keep the branch short, orient it so it drains back into the run, and prefer the shortest pattern that does the job. A tee installed with the branch pointing up on a horizontal line will hold product no matter how well the rest of the line is designed.
State the tube standard and size, the pattern, whether the tee is equal or reduced and the branch size if reduced, the grade, the internal Ra and the surface condition. Ask for the EN 10204 3.1 certificate at the order stage.
