Description

Pneumatic tube carries control air between the valve, the fitting and the cylinder. It is specified as outside diameter by inside diameter, because the outside diameter is what the collet of a push-in fitting grips and seals against, while the bore is what governs flow. A fitting made for 8 mm tube will not hold 6 mm tube, and tube of the right outside diameter but a thinner wall will collapse under the collet, so both figures matter and both must be quoted when ordering.

Material is the other choice. Polyurethane is the flexible option, tolerating a tight bend radius and repeated flexing, which suits tube that moves with a machine or is coiled to a moving head. Polyamide, sold as nylon, is stiffer and holds pressure better at temperature, which suits fixed runs in ducting and along frames. Polyethylene is the cheaper option for low duty. All three lose pressure capability as temperature rises, and that fall is steep rather than gradual, so a working pressure quoted at 20 °C should never be assumed to hold in a plant room or in summer sun.

Colour is worth using deliberately. Where several circuits run in the same duct, giving each one a colour turns fault-finding from tracing to looking. The coils illustrated are blue, black and natural.

When ordering, quote the outside diameter and bore together, the material, the colour and the coil length, and state the working pressure and the maximum temperature the run will see so the supplier can confirm the tube is rated for it. Cut the tube square with a proper tube cutter - a sloping or crushed end is the single most common cause of a push-in joint that will not seal.
