Description

Instantaneous couplings are the quick-connect fittings used on layflat canvas and rubber-lined fire delivery hose. The male plug is pushed into the female socket and turned about a quarter turn, engaging bayonet lugs; two spring plungers on the female half hold the joint and are depressed to release it. The halves are asymmetric, so a male and a female are needed to make a joint.

BS 336 is the British standard that governs the pattern, and it remains the pattern in use across the Gulf, the Indian subcontinent and other Commonwealth markets. The same standard also covers BSRT round-thread suction couplings for pump inlet hose; those are a different connection and do not mate with BI delivery couplings.

Bodies are produced in brass and in cast aluminium. CA-FIRE, which manufactures the full BS 336 range, publishes 3/4 to 3 inch for BI delivery couplings, 2 1/2 to 6 inch for BSRT suction couplings, and 16 bar (232 psi) working pressure. The stock listed here is not branded, so treat that figure as the published rating for the pattern rather than a verified rating for the item supplied.

When ordering, state the hose bore, the material (brass or aluminium), whether male or female halves are required, and whether the female should be the double-pull type used on hose ends or the single-twist type used on fixed pipework and manifolds.
