Description

A Bauer type lever coupling is a two-part quick joint for site dewatering and water transfer lines. The male half is a spherical (ball) end; the female half carries two hinged lever hooks that swing over the ball and pull the joint up by hand, without tools or bolting. Because the seat is spherical, the line can be deflected at the coupling instead of requiring bends or adaptors.

The pattern originated with Roehren- und Pumpenwerk BAUER, whose HK system runs in sizes HK 50, 76, 89, 108, 133, 159 and 194 - 2 to 7 5/8 inch - in hot-dip galvanised steel as standard, and also in aluminium and stainless steel. Two published figures vary with size and should not be read from the headline claims. Pressure: BAUER's own tables give PN 20 bar at HK 50 and HK 89 but PN 12 bar at HK 76, 108, 133, 159 and 194, with HK 194 also available in PN 20; the "up to 20 bar" on the product page is the system maximum, not the rating of every size. Articulation: 30 degrees is published for HK 50 to HK 108 and 20 degrees for HK 133 and above. Galvanising is to DIN EN ISO 1461 and seals resist +110 degrees C in special compounds. Listed media include water, waste water, compressed air, sludge, mortar, bentonite and petroleum products.

Copy ranges sold as Bauer style are not rated identically to the original. Dixon publishes its Bauer and Travis style range at 290 psi for 50 - 90 mm and 174 psi for 100 - 300 mm - and 290 psi at 76 mm is a higher rating than BAUER gives its own HK 76 - so the same nominal size can carry different ratings depending on who made it. Where the maker is not documented, work to the lower figure.

When ordering, state the nominal size, whether a male (ball) or female (lever) half is wanted, the end preparation - hose tail, male or female thread, or weld end - the body material, and the seal compound for the medium and temperature.

Size Range BAUER HK sizes 50, 76, 89, 108, 133, 159 and 194, i.e. 2 to 7 5/8 inch. BAUER's product page describes the range as 2 to 8 inch.
Pressure Rating Size-dependent in the genuine BAUER HK range: PN 20 bar at HK 50 (2 in) and HK 89 (3 1/2 in); PN 12 bar at HK 76, HK 108, HK 133, HK 159 and HK 194 (HK 194 also available in PN 20). BAUER's product page quotes the system maximum as up to 20 bar. Copy "Bauer style" ranges are rated differently again - Dixon publishes 290 psi for 50 - 90 mm and 174 psi for 100 - 300 mm. Confirm the PN for the size and the maker ordered.
