Description

A ball valve shuts off by turning a bored ball through 90°. MSS SP-110, the standard practice covering threaded, socket-welding, solder-joint, grooved and flared-end metal ball valves in NPS 1/4 to 4, covers carbon steel among its body materials and states that valves of this class are intended for on-off operation, with throttling service only where the manufacturer recommends it.

The two-piece valve in the photograph carries "1000 WOG" cast into the body. WOG is the older trade marking for the cold working pressure in water and oil service at ambient temperature under non-shock conditions: 1000 WOG is 1000 psi, about 69 bar. It is not a steam rating and it does not apply at elevated temperature. Confirm the marking on the size actually being ordered, since the rating of this class of valve commonly falls in the larger sizes.

Full bore and reduced ("half") bore are both offered. The full bore valve passes the full pipe area; the reduced bore valve uses a smaller ball behind the same end connection, which is cheaper and lighter but adds pressure drop. ISO 17292:2015 names the three bore classes as full bore, reduced bore and double reduced bore, and covers threaded and socket-welding end valves in DN 8 to DN 50 (NPS 1/4 to 2).

Carbon steel bodies are for non-corrosive duty; they are not a substitute for stainless steel on chemical, potable water or marine service. State on order the nominal size, the thread form (ISO 7-1 or ASME B1.20.1 NPT — ISO 17292:2015 permits either, and they are not interchangeable), full or reduced bore, the seat material and the required pressure designation.
