Description
An air-operated piston pump is a reciprocating pump driven by an air motor at the top of the shank. Compressed air drives the motor, the motor drives a piston in the fluid end, and the compression ratio of the pump multiplies the air pressure into fluid pressure — a 3:1 pump raises 8 bar of air to roughly 24 bar of oil, an 8:1 pump to roughly 64 bar (both figures read off the outlet-pressure curves in MECLUBE’s own datasheets). Higher ratio buys pressure at the cost of flow, which is why the ratio is the first thing to settle when specifying one.
Double-acting means the fluid end delivers on both the up and the down stroke. The result is a continuous, near-constant flow rather than the pulsing of a single-acting pump, which is what makes these suitable for fixed lubrication installations feeding several outlets rather than just drum-to-container decanting.
MECLUBE builds this pump in three ratios on a common fluid end and shank. The Mod.603 at 3:1 delivers 30 l/min and is recommended for low to medium viscosity oil (SAE 15/130) and antifreeze over 40-50 m; the Mod.605 at 5:1 delivers 28 l/min for medium to high viscosity oil (SAE 15/240) and antifreeze over 150-200 m; the Mod.608 at 8:1 delivers 20 l/min and handles heavier oil (to SAE 15/280) over the same distance. Air consumption is 220 l/min on the 3:1 and 8:1 but 250 l/min on the 5:1 — size the compressor against the ratio actually supplied. All three take a F 1/4" G air inlet and a M 1/2" G oil outlet and run at 80 dB. Shank lengths of 215, 740, 940 and 1250 mm suit fixed mounting, 50-60 l drums, 180-220 l drums and 750-1500 l tanks respectively.
When ordering, state the compression ratio, the drum or tank size the pump must reach into, the oil grade and the run length to the outlet. Delivery rate in service depends on air pressure, fluid viscosity and temperature, hose bore and the control gun used, so the catalogue figure is the rate at 8 bar and not a guaranteed duty. MECLUBE notes the pump will operate between 3 and 8 bar of air, with 6-8 bar quoted as the working range.
