Description
An automatic nozzle is the hand-held valve at the end of a fuel dispensing hose. Squeezing the lever lifts a main poppet and fuel passes to the spout; a hold-open catch lets the operator set one of several fixed flow positions and release the lever during a long delivery.
Automatic shut-off works from a small sensing port near the tip of the spout. While the port is open to air, a venturi in the body holds a vacuum chamber balanced. When rising fuel covers the port the vacuum can no longer bleed, a diaphragm collapses and trips the latch holding the main poppet open, and the nozzle closes. This is a mechanical action with no power supply and no electrical connection.
EN 13012, Petrol filling stations — Construction and performance of automatic nozzles for use on fuel dispensers, is the European standard that governs this class of product. It covers nozzles dispensing liquid fuels and aqueous urea solution at up to 200 l/min into vehicles, boats, light aircraft and portable containers, at ambient temperatures of −20 to +40 °C, with provision for an extended range. It does not cover equipment dispensing compressed or liquefied media, which use entirely different couplings.
When ordering, state the inlet thread size and form, the spout outside diameter (the tank filler neck fixes this, and petrol and diesel spouts are not the same diameter), the flow rate the pump will deliver, and the fuel.
