Mild steel bar in round and hexagon sections, cut from 1 metre lengths. This is the everyday workshop stock: shafts and spindles, pins and dowels, spacers, packers, brackets and the pieces a repair needs turned or welded up on the day.
It machines and welds readily, which is most of why it is used, and it rusts, which is the other half of the specification. Anything staying outdoors or meeting water wants paint, plating or galvanising after machining — or a stainless bar instead, if the part cannot be coated once it is in service.
Hexagon bar is the section for parts needing flats for a spanner. Hexagon stock is sized across the flats, not across the corners.
When enquiring, give the section, the size and how many lengths, and say what the part is for if it has to be welded or hardened — that is what decides whether mild steel is the right bar at all.
