Description

Nitrile is the sheet to specify wherever mineral oil, diesel, hydraulic fluid or grease can reach the joint. It gives good general resistance to oils together with good tensile strength, flexibility, low compression set and low permeability to media, which is why it is the standard material for cut gaskets and washers on oil service, for pump and compressor covers, and for lining oily plant.

Its limits are worth stating plainly. Resistance to aromatic hydrocarbons is limited; it is not recommended for ketones, ethers or amines; and its ageing and ozone resistance are only moderate, so nitrile is not the sheet for long outdoor exposure - neoprene or EPDM is used there instead.

Trelleborg publishes a service range of -30 °C to +130 °C for its NBR sheeting, with grades reaching -40 °C. The Parker O-Ring Handbook gives the polymer upper limit as +100 °C with shorter life to +121 °C, and a lower limit between -34 °C and -57 °C depending on the acrylonitrile content of the compound. Order by hardness in Shore A, thickness and roll width.

Specifications

Material Nitrile rubber (acrylonitrile-butadiene)
Polymer Designation NBR
Temperature Range -30 °C to +130 °C for NBR sheeting, with grades reaching -40 °C. The Parker O-Ring Handbook gives the polymer upper limit as +100 °C (shorter life to +121 °C) and the lower limit as -34 °C to -57 °C depending on acrylonitrile content. Confirm against the compound supplied.
Fluid Resistance Good general resistance to oils; limited resistance to aromatic hydrocarbons; not recommended for polar liquids such as ketones, ethers and amines
Mechanical Properties Good tensile strength, flexibility, compression set and impermeability to media; moderate ageing properties
Sheet Width 1 metre
Supply Form Sold by the roll, made up to 50 kg. Every roll is 1 m wide, so its length falls as the thickness rises. State the thickness and the length or area needed.
