Nylon & Teflon Sheets

Nylon and PTFE (Teflon) Sheets

Machinable engineering plastic sheet in polyamide (nylon) and PTFE. Nylon for strength, stiffness and wear; PTFE for chemical resistance, low friction and high temperature. Cut and machined to wear pads, slides, gaskets and insulators. PTFE is stocked as 1 m x 1 m sheet from 1 mm to 8 mm; nylon sheet is supplied to order.

Description

These are two different materials sold side by side because both are cut from sheet and machined. Polyamide - nylon, usually PA 6 or PA 66 - is the stronger and stiffer of the two. It machines cleanly, wears well against steel and is used for wear strips, slide plates, bushes, gears, rollers and spacers.

PTFE is the chemically inert one. Almost nothing attacks it, it has the lowest friction of the common plastics and it takes the highest temperature, which makes it the material for chemical gaskets, valve seats, lined chute faces, slide bearings and electrical insulation. It is soft and it creeps under sustained load, so it is not a substitute for nylon on a loaded bearing surface.

Published figures for virgin stock shapes: PTFE has a continuous service temperature to +260 °C and a density of 2.15 g/cm³; PA 6 has a long-term service temperature of +100 °C, a short-term maximum of +160 °C and a density of 1.14 g/cm³. Nylon also absorbs moisture, which swells the part and softens it, so allow for it on close-tolerance work. Order by material, thickness, and sheet size.
