Description

Rubber hose of this class is identified by its cover colour before anything else. Orange is the cover colour for the duty covered by EN 16436-1; blue is oxygen and red is the fuel side in welding service. The hose photographed is orange with a black rubber lining, which is what the Gulf trade stocks.

Two published standards cover hose of this appearance and they are different products. EN 16436-1 covers rubber and plastics hose in the vapour phase - the hose that connects a cylinder, a regulator and an appliance - for working pressures from 0 to 30 bar in three classes, in ambient temperatures from -30 °C to +70 °C. EN ISO 3821 covers hose for welding, cutting and allied processes, at 2 MPa (20 bar) normal duty or 1 MPa (10 bar) light duty for bores up to 6.3 mm, and -20 °C to +60 °C. Check which of the two is printed on the hose before it goes on a line.

A length of hose and a made-up hose assembly are also different products under different standards: the assembly with its fittings is EN 16436-2, or ISO 8207 for welding hose. Fittings on the fuel side are left-hand threaded and notched around the nut, oxygen fittings are right-hand and plain, and the two must never be adapted to one another. State the bore, the length, the required standard and class, and whether the hose is wanted loose or made up with fittings.

Colour and Duty Identification Orange cover. ISO 3821 designates a hose by bore, duty and colour/media service; its own worked examples give blue for oxygen and "red and orange" for universal fuel media. In the Gulf trade orange is the medium named in its standard, the fluid named in the standard and utility supply cover colour and red is the fuel side. The standard's full colour table is not public, so confirm the media printed on the hose rather than relying on colour.
