Clear PVC hose is supplied in three constructions. The plain-wall type is a single extrusion of flexible plasticised PVC, used for low-pressure transfer and for sight lines where the flow has to be visible. The helix-reinforced type carries a rigid spiral embedded in the wall so that the bore stays open under negative pressure, which is what makes it a suction hose. The braid-reinforced type carries a textile braid between two PVC layers; it takes pressure but not vacuum, and will collapse if put on the suction side of a pump.
Typical duty is water, air and food or beverage transfer where the medium is compatible with PVC and the temperature is moderate. PVC stiffens as it cools and softens as it warms, so both the pressure rating and the bend behaviour of any given wall are temperature-dependent, and a figure quoted at 20 °C does not hold at 50 °C.
