Solenoid Valve - A2

U401-A2 Fuel Dispenser Solenoid Valve, Two-Stage

Model U401-A2

Two-stage solenoid valve fitted inside a fuel dispenser to control delivery. The twin coils give a main flow rate and a reduced end-of-delivery flow, so the valve can close on a preset volume without overshoot.

Description

The solenoid valve is the electrically operated stop valve in the fuel path of a dispenser, downstream of the meter and upstream of the hose. It is normally closed: the dispenser's controller energises it to start a delivery and de-energises it to stop, so the valve and not the operator is what defines the measured quantity.

Accuracy on a preset delivery depends on what happens in the last few litres. If the valve closes from full flow, the momentum of the fuel column carries product past the intended figure — overshoot. A two-stage valve avoids this: two coils operate a main and a reduced-flow element of the same diaphragm valve, and the controller drops from the main flow rate to a much lower rate a short distance before the preset volume, so the final closure happens at low velocity. The valve photographed here has two coils and this is the arrangement it uses.

The body is brass with male threaded connections both sides and a moulded cable gland on each coil. Fitted in a dispenser cabinet it is normally mounted horizontally with the coils uppermost.

What is not published for the A2 variant is its electrical rating, port size and flow band. The manufacturer publishes those figures for the U401-B of the same series but not for the A2, and copying them across would be a guess — the coil voltage in particular must be confirmed against the dispenser's own supply before ordering. State the supply voltage, port size and required flow rate when enquiring.
