Description

Bar stock in type 316 stainless steel, held in round and hexagon sections and cut from 1 metre lengths. It is what a workshop turns into shafts, pins, spacers, studs, valve stems and machined fittings, and what a fabricator uses where the finished part has to last outdoors.

Type 316 carries molybdenum, which is what separates it from 304. It holds up better against chlorides and salt air, and that is why it is the grade written on drawings for coastal and process work in the Gulf. Where the part never meets chlorides, 304 is usually the cheaper answer — say which grade the drawing calls for rather than assuming the dearer one.

Hexagon bar is the section to ask for where the finished part needs flats for a spanner: unions, adaptors, plugs and stems. Hexagon stock is sized across the flats, not across the corners, so a 20 mm hexagon measures 20 mm between two parallel faces.

When enquiring, give the section, the size, how many lengths, and whether a material certificate has to come with the delivery — that is decided by the job, not by the bar, and it is easier to arrange before the metal is cut.
