Description

A flare fitting seals by pressing a cone machined on the fitting against a flare formed on the end of the tube, held by a nut running on a straight thread. The seal is metal to metal on the cone, so no tape or jointing compound goes on the flare face; sealant belongs only on a tapered pipe thread at the other end of the fitting, if there is one.

The set photographed is the usual service-line assortment in unplated brass: loose flare nuts, male flare to male pipe thread adapters, flare to hose tail stems, and long flare-ended stems for running through a bulkhead or a cylinder cabinet.

Flare angle is the one thing to get right. The flare used on appliance and refrigeration tube is the SAE 45° flare, specified in SAE J512 for automotive and appliance tube fittings and SAE J513 for refrigeration fittings, with the flare on the tube itself formed to SAE J533. The 37° JIC flare of SAE J514 is a hydraulic connection and looks almost identical. A 45° and a 37° fitting of the same nominal size will screw together and will leak. Confirm the angle of the fittings and of the flaring tool before mixing sources on a service line, and state the tube outside diameter and the thread when ordering.

Specifications

Flare Form SAE 45° flare is the flare form used on the medium named in its standard, appliance and refrigeration tube - specified in SAE J512 (automotive and appliance tube fittings) and SAE J513 (refrigeration tube fittings). Verify the angle of the stock held before ordering.
Tube Flare The single or double 45° flare formed on the tube itself is dimensioned in SAE J533
Interchange Warning A 45° flare fitting and a 37° JIC fitting (SAE J514) of the same nominal size will screw together and will leak. They are not interchangeable and no adapter should be improvised between them.
