Description

A double bolt clamp is the heavy alternative to a worm drive clip on large-bore industrial hose. Two cast halves with reinforced bolt lugs are drawn together on two bolts, and internal ridges bite into the hose cover to hold it on the shank. Because the halves are drawn together rather than wound round, the clamping force is far higher and it is applied evenly on both sides of the hose.

Selection is by measured hose outside diameter. Dixon, whose clamp catalogue is public, is explicit about this - measure hose O.D. accurately before ordering clamps - and lists its double bolt range in OD bands from 1-8/64 inch to 3-32/64 inch, and with saddles up to 17-32/64 inch, that is about 29 mm to 445 mm. Its published tightening torques run from 15 to 60 ft lb on the plain range and 40 to 260 ft lb on the range with saddles, dry, with the warning that lubricant on the bolts will adversely affect clamp performance.

No ISO or DIN designation was found for this American double bolt pattern. In European practice the clamp used to retain a hose on a shank is the safety clamp to EN 14420-3, formerly DIN 2817, matched to the hose shanks of EN 14420-2 - a different design of two shells with four bolts and teeth that grip the hose cover. If a job specifies EN 14420-3, a double bolt clamp is not the same article.

State at order: hose outside diameter measured over the cover, hose type - Dixon advises consulting the maker before using double bolt clamps on helical wire hose - and the finish required.

Specifications

Type Two-piece cast clamp, two bolts, reinforced bolt lugs, internal gripping ridges, galvanised finish
Selection Basis By measured hose outside diameter, supplied in OD bands - not by hose bore. Dixon: measure hose O.D. accurately before ordering clamps
Size Coverage (reference range) Dixon's double bolt range covers hose OD 1-8/64 to 3-32/64 inch (about 29 to 89 mm) and, with saddles, up to 17-32/64 inch (about 445 mm). The bands actually stocked must be confirmed with Al Taiyeb
Tightening Torque (reference) Size dependent and specified dry: Dixon publishes 15 to 60 ft lb on its plain double bolt range and 40 to 260 ft lb on the range with saddles, and states that the use of lubricant on bolts will adversely affect clamp performance
Material (reference) Plated iron across the reference range, with two sizes in investment cast carbon steel. The material of the clamp supplied must be confirmed
Standard No ISO or DIN designation was found for the double bolt pattern. The European clamp for retaining a hose on a shank is the safety clamp to EN 14420-3 (formerly DIN 2817), used with the hose shanks of EN 14420-2 - a different design of two shells with four bolts
