Emergency Shut-Off Valve

U403 Emergency Shut-Off (Shear) Valve

Model U403

Shear valve installed in the supply line beneath a fuel dispenser. A groove at island level lets the body break cleanly if the dispenser is struck, closing the poppet; a fusible link closes the same poppet at 75 °C in a fire.

Description

An emergency shut-off valve, also called a shear valve or impact valve, sits in the supply line directly under the dispenser with its shear groove level with the top of the concrete island. If a vehicle strikes the dispenser, the body parts at that groove rather than at the buried pipework, and the spring-loaded poppet below the groove slams shut. Fuel in the buried line stays in the buried line.

The same poppet is held open by a fusible link on the lever arm. In a fire at the island the link softens and releases at 75 °C, closing the valve without anyone having to reach it. Closing speed is 0.5 s.

The U403 is rated 0 to 120 l/min at a working pressure of 0.2 MPa (2 bar), with a painted cast iron body, nickel plated surfaces and Buna-N O-rings, for an operating environment of −30 to +55 °C. The valve inlet at the bottom is female pipe thread, and installation includes a U-bolt assembly anchoring the valve to the concrete so that the shear plane is fixed and the buried pipe is not carried away with the dispenser.

EN 13617-3, Petrol filling stations — Part 3: Safety requirements for construction and performance of shear valves, is the European standard governing this class of valve; its requirements apply at ambient temperatures from −20 to +40 °C, with the possibility of an extended range. Installation height is critical — a valve set too high or too low will not shear at the groove — and the anchoring must be completed before the dispenser is commissioned.
