A foot valve is a non-return valve at the submerged end of a suction tube. It opens under flow while the pump runs and closes as soon as the pump stops, so the fuel standing in the suction line cannot drain back into the tank. Without it a suction-fed dispenser loses its prime between deliveries and the pump has to lift a fresh column of fuel every time — slow, hard on the pump, and on a long or high lift it may not prime at all.
The U404 uses a double-poppet arrangement and closes in 0.5 s. The strainer basket around the inlet screens rust, scale and tank sediment out of the suction line before they can reach the pump, the meter and the dispenser's own filter.
Body and valve are brass, with seals in either Buna-N (NBR) or Viton (FKM) — the seal material follows the fuel, and Viton is the choice where ethanol-blended petrol is handled. Operating temperature is −30 to +55 °C. The manufacturer recommends the valve for suction lines where the pressure does not exceed 34 ft of head, about 10.4 m.
State the port size and thread form, the fuel, and the seal material when ordering. On an installation with a submersible pump rather than a suction dispenser a foot valve is not used; check which arrangement the tank has before ordering.
