Description

Compressed fibre sheet is the general purpose gasket material of the workshop. Fibre is calendered with an elastomer binder into a dense sheet that can be cut and punched on site, so one sheet covers every flange, cover plate, pump casing and manhole on a plant without holding a gasket for each size. DIN 28091-2 classifies material of this construction as fibre-based sealing sheet, type FA; ASTM F104 gives the line call-out system used to describe a particular grade.

The important point when buying is that compressed fibre sheet is not one material. Grades differ in fibre, binder and density, and each grade has its own pressure and temperature envelope, published by the maker as a p x T chart. Two green sheets that look identical can have very different limits, so ask for the grade designation and its p x T chart rather than buying by colour and thickness alone.

Thickness is the other decision. A thin gasket seals better and relaxes less; a thicker one is only needed to take up flange face irregularity or distortion. Cut the gasket to the dimensions of the flange standard in use - ASME B16.21 for ASME B16.5 flanges, EN 1514-1 for EN 1092-1 PN flanges - and state whether full-face or inside-bolt-circle gaskets are wanted.

Specifications

Material Type Compressed fibre sealing sheet - mineral and aramid fibre bound with an elastomer; the fibre-based sealing sheet type FA of DIN 28091-2
Grade Classification Non-metallic gasket materials are described by the ASTM F104 line call-out; ask the maker for the grade designation
Cut Gasket Dimensions Cut to ASME B16.21 for ASME B16.5 flanges, or to EN 1514-1 for EN 1092-1 PN-designated flanges. The gasket dimension follows the flange standard, size and class - it is not chosen independently.
Sheet Size 1.5 m x 1.5 m
Thickness Range Stocked 0.5 mm to 5 mm
Supply Form Sold as whole sheets of 1.5 m x 1.5 m, from which gaskets are cut. State the thickness and the number of sheets, or the flange sizes to be cut.
