Description
This is a three-piece bodied ball valve. Two end caps carrying the pipe connections are clamped to a centre section by four tie bolts; slacken the four nuts and the centre section, ball, seats and stem come out sideways while the end caps stay welded or screwed into the line. That is the whole point of the design and it is why the valve is specified on lines that are welded in and cannot be broken to service a valve. "Four bolt" in the trade name is the bolt count, not a valve family.
Both threaded and weld-end versions are offered. ISO 17292:2015 covers threaded and socket-welding end metal ball valves in sizes DN 8 to DN 50 (NPS 1/4 to 2), and MSS SP-110 covers threaded, socket-welding, solder-joint, grooved and flared-end ball valves in NPS 1/4 to 4, including stainless steel bodies. Where the ends are threaded, ISO 17292:2015 permits threads to either ISO 7-1 or ASME B1.20.1 (NPT), and the two are not interchangeable.
Pressure designations under ISO 17292:2015 are Class 150, 300, 600 and 800, or PN 16, 25, 40, 63 and 100, with Class 800 reserved for threaded and socket-welding end valves. The shell rating follows ASME B16.34 for Class-designated valves or EN 12516-1 for PN-designated valves, and the valve rating is the lesser of the shell rating and the seat rating — on a soft-seated valve it is normally the seat that governs.
On order state the nominal size, whether threaded or weld ends are required and to which standard, the stainless grade, the seat material, the pressure designation and whether a mounting pad for an actuator is needed. Where the valve is welded into the line, remember that the seats and seals must be removed before welding or they will be destroyed by the heat.
